Watercolor Collage

I had a Watercolor Batik Workshop last Saturday with a wonderful group of students. It is always so much fun to spend the day with other artists and to see their excxitement when they iron off the final layers of wax on their batiks and get to see the results of their creative efforts. So far (knock on wood) everyone who has tried the watercolor batiks has gone home happy!

The next workshop will be on Sat. Sept 17, 2011 in Colorado Springs, CO and we will be doing a Watercolor Collage similar to the one shown above. We will spend the day painting tissue and rice papers and then incorporating them into a watercolor painting of cactus and flowers. Hope you can join us for another fun and creative day!

The Creative Challenge this week was to use a resist in your artwork. I used oil pastel with watercolor because the waxy nature of the pastel will repel the paint. I began the painting by drawing with different colors of oil pastel and then applied the watercolor. When everything was dry I added some more detail with the pastel and then add darks with the paint where needed.

Soft, white blossoms floating in a sea of leaves. I collaged on thin pieces of rice paper around the flowers to add interest and texture to the background. When I came back in to reinforce the darks, the paint reacted in unpredictable ways on and around the areas with rice paper. Combining collage with watercolor provides endless possibilities for creativity.

This painting is a combination of watercolor and collage. I painted wet on wet and then added definition to the flowers when everything was dry. Small print was stamped on thin rice paper before gluing it to the paper for added interest and texture.

This painting began as a class demo for painting roses. I later came back to it and decided to experiment and used bubble wrap to stamp some texture in the background with green watercolor and randomly collaged on some very thin pieces of rice paper. I then used white gesso on a stamp with musical notes and one with the word 'love' to add some fun to the composition.
